Figure Studio is Writano’s workspace for building publication figures — charts, diagrams, annotated images, multi-panel compositions, and equation plots. This guide covers the most common path: a chart from your own data, exported into a paper.
Open the chart builder
From the editor sidebar or the Figures page, open Figure Studio and choose the Chart tab. You get a data grid on one side and a live preview on the other. Enter your categories and values directly, or paste a column from a spreadsheet:

Pick a chart type — bar, line, scatter, area, and more are available — and the preview updates as you type.
Style it for a journal
The right panel controls the figure’s appearance. Choose a Journal Style to match the fonts and sizing conventions of a target venue, then adjust axis labels, the legend, and colors. Writano’s accent palette is a good default, but every series color is editable.
Tip: Keep figures legible at print size. A single-column figure is narrow, so prefer short axis labels and a small number of series.
Export or insert
When the figure looks right, use Export / Insert:
- Insert drops the figure into your current paper as a
figureenvironment with a\label, ready to\ref. - Export → PDF gives you a vector file for pixel-perfect figures in LaTeX; PNG is available for quick previews.
Saving stores the chart in your project’s figures. Click a saved figure later and it reopens here for editing — change the data, save again, and it updates in place rather than creating a duplicate.
Reopening and round-tripping
A figure built in Studio remembers how it was made. Opening it from the sidebar or its preview brings back the original chart, diagram, or script, so you are always editing the source of the figure, not a flattened image. Imported images open in the annotate tool instead.
