Chat is Writano’s space for project discussion that doesn’t belong on a specific line — planning, questions, agreeing who does what. It lives with the project, so the conversation is where the work is.

Team and direct messages

Chat has a team channel for everyone on the project and direct-message tabs for one-to-one conversations. Messages support reactions, threading for side-conversations, and #section references to point at part of the document.

Editing and history

You can edit and delete your own messages, and the channel keeps the running conversation so someone joining later can catch up. Read positions are tracked, so you return to where you left off rather than re-reading everything.

Private by design

Chat messages are encrypted at rest, so the discussion around your unpublished work stays private. Chat is delivered over a lightweight polling mechanism rather than the document’s real-time channel, which keeps it reliable and separate from your editing session.

Note: Reach for chat when the point isn’t about a specific passage. If it is about a passage, a comment on that selection will be easier for everyone to act on.
